The Apple TV 4K can be controlled by IR, but it's sub-par. Yes, that is true, but my main point is there is consolidation of applications on these TVs, whether it's with the apps built into the TV, or if it's with a third party device, like an Amazon Fire TV 4K or Apple TV 4K, and both of those devices are controlled (primarily) by Bluetooth. Maybe this will change if the world standardizes more on Roku/Android TV/etc. That's my big beef with smart TVs - if you have a couple year old one, you're kinda out of luck getting more streaming services. My 2016-era OLED got Disney+ to my great surprise, but is missing lots of other services available with newer models. I think it's pretty much only Netflix that might still work, and to be honest, I haven't tried Netflix on it in years so who knows if that's even working. Among my other TVs, I'm still running an LG smart TV from 2012 that doesn't even have YouTube anymore (it got killed when YouTube abandoned the older Flash-based platform). And of course, the remote has voice control too. And the remotes often have an Apps button anyway, that brings you to a list of all the installed apps. The Sony X90J comes with YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video buttons right on the remote.īesides stuff like Crave and AppleTV+, most people don’t use that many more apps. You have much more choice than you realize. Also, within Prime Video and the Apple TV app on Android, they have external service providers and video services like Starz for example. I'm not as familiar with the AppleTV but I'm sure some streaming channel apps are available.

And on Android TV I am pretty sure you can get the Global TV app, Bell Fibe App, Rogers, Crave.

That's part of the reason why digital streaming is taking over. I can definitely live without a Harmony remote upstairs.Ĭonvenience is key to a majority of the population. Right now I have my TV, PS4 and old Sony receiver hooked up to my main TV and that's it. You need the Harmony with other devices, not if you're just using a TV and an Apple TV.

(Well, I guess I need the harmony because I have other devices - if it was just my TV and my apple TV I wouldn't) if I'm running all those apps from, say, an Apple TV, then I still kinda need the harmony. Netflix, maybe YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, sure, but not much else.
